Artist John Tolmay is back and we are excited to show you one of his newest sculptures, Tswalu Granti.
With two editions already cast, Tswalu Granti is a great addition to John Tolmay’s smaller works. This Grant’s Gazelle sculpture is just under eight inches tall with fantastic detail, perfect for a table centerpiece.
The first mold captures all of John’s detail, even on such an impressively small scale.
Once the rubber mold is complete with its plaster mother mold, we pour and pull a wax pattern from the mold. After we cut away the pour spouts, we remove any seam lines and make sure every detail matches John’s original clay. The two Tswalu Granti sculptures are chased and set up on cups with vents and gates and are ready for their second mold which will be eight layers of investment, able to withstand the heat of the furnace and the heat of the molten bronze being cast into it. Once the bronze has been cast and is cooled, we chip away the investment shell revealing Tswalu Granti in bronze. After removing the cups, vents and gates the metalwork begins. Then the sculptures are sand blasted and ready for their patina.
Artist John Tolmay prefers his sculptures’ patina match their wildlife counterpart, so our expert pateneur mixes heat with chemicals for the best result. After the patina is complete, Tswalu Granti is ready for a photoshoot then sent to their new homes.
Tswalu Granti is an edition of 50 with two already sold. To purchase your own Tswalu Granti visit BronzeAfrica.com for more information and check out Tolmay’s other bronze sculptures while you are there.
